Thirty years ago, when China cracked down on student protests in Tiananmen Square and the Chinese army killed at least 10,000 people, Australian, and other western democracies opened their doors to Chinese students to let them stay.

Now western democracies are stopping the boats and building barriers, such as the US-Mexico barrier, while China is building roads through its “One Belt One Road” initiative. China seems to be opening its doors and reducing its lazy bigotry, while western democracies do the reverse. Could the unthinkable happen and China is able to obtain a moral ascendancy in world politics, like the economic and military one it appears to be getting?
